Dinner Party Paris

Our wonderful and very French friend Olivier Billon (CEO & Co-founder of Ykone & who interviewed us here) invited us over for an intimate dinner at his Parisian flat on our recent trip abroad. It was not only an enjoyable night because of the company and conversation but also due to the service Olivier hired to perform the meal. You get one chef who buys all the ingredients that morning at the market, makes hors d’oeuvres followed by a three course meal with wine pairings, and then cleans up the kitchen as well as all the dinnerware which means… our host was able to be with us and enjoy the evening as much as we did. I wish this were more common in the US, or rather I wish I were friends with people who do this (all the time).

My apologies, I have all these amazing and strange food photographs but not a clue what it was we actually ate. Our chef beautifully described each course as it was served…in French! That’s okay, it sounded better that way.

Bon appetit!

In the Studio With…

Shot on September 5th at Ann Street Studio in New York City

Tell me about your jewelry line BRVTVS, what’s the story?

I originally started it as a total selfish endeavour because I couldn’t find anything I wanted to wear so I just decided to teach myself how to make pieces I liked.

What does BRVTVS stand for?

The line is named after Marcus Brutus who killed his best friend Julius Caesar. When the line first started I had a line of fancy friendship bracelet so I thought it would be fun to name the line after someone who is notorious for stabbing his friend in the back…. I’m also obsessed with Roman history.

Do you make all your pieces by hand?

Yep.

What are some your favorite projects that have come about since starting your own line?

The most recent project I did was designing a series of ear cuffs and rings for designer Jason Wu’s Spring collection which showed this past September at NYFW.

What is a perfect day in NYC to you?

The perfect day involves being on a blanket somewhere. No shoes. A good book… and a cup of coffee.

Your personal style is always amazing, where do you shop?

I find a lot of stuff on eBay! In the above photograph those are vintage men’s Levi’s 517 that I tailored with a seam up the back to be a high waisted worn in skinny jean.

Giveaway!

Last year I had the unforgettable experience of staying in Kelly Wearstler’s Malibu mansion for a photoshoot. I can tell you, everything this woman designs is unique, artistic, and seriously special… kind of like Of a Kind.

Of a Kind sells limited-edition pieces from emerging fashion designers and tells their stories online. It is hands down the best place to discover designers and own their pieces! Of a Kind’s recent collaboration with Kelly Wearstler yielded this beautiful hand casted Pyrite Facet Cuff (value of $290) and we are giving ONE of these beauties away!.. which is super special because there are only 50 in the whole wide world.

How to enter: Super simple, just sign up for their (very well written & beautiful) mailing list HERE.

A winner will be chosen on December 14th!

While you are waiting to find out if you’ve won, you can “meet the designer” or read “behind the scenes” on the editions page. That’s one of the reasons I heart Of a Kind… everything is better with a story.

Looking for unique holiday gifts and want to support up and coming designers? I think this is perfect for him; a great gift for a little sister; what female photographer wouldn’t love to have this?; and I might actually buy this one for myself!

Happy Shopping!

Be Delicious

DKNY Be Delicious

Perfume is such a personal signature. I love how I can pass a stranger on the street and they smell like my first boyfriend, or when someone is wearing my college perfume and all of a sudden I’m taken back to that time in my life and I can remember things so vividly. My wedding day perfume, which I wore throughout our honeymoon, instantly takes me back to that day whenever I put it on now for romantic occasions. I love that: being able to remember a feeling, a moment, a time in my life just through the delicacy of scent.

By now you know my affection and long-term creative relationship with DKNY. I was looking at the Be Delicious bottle at the studio and I thought it could be fun to show visually the beauty of perfume… the way the glossy liquid swirls and how the light dances. If you know DKNY’s Be Delicious you know its main note is apple, fittingly so since DKNY is all about the BIG APPLE (see all the references now?). I love the opportunity Cinemagraphs give us to make things come to life and celebrate beauty even in small ways.

What is your favorite perfume? Do you change what you wear depending on the weather, your mood, your style that day, or where you are traveling to? Should you have one scent forever or should it change as we change in the course of life?
