Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren's Fall 2016 collection shown at New York Fashion Week

The close of New York Fashion Week always ends on a high note for me with the Ralph Lauren collection. Usually I come for the gowns, which are the most beautiful classic American study in simplicity and elegance.

However, for the Ralph Lauren Fall 2016 presentation I was more enamored with the first 14 or so looks that came quiet and confidently down the runway. Beige on beige on beige was the story in smart men’s tailoring that looked both chic and comfortable. It’s a certain kind of woman who can pull these off, someone with personality and brains, like a Diane Keaton character in some bygone rom-com. She dresses for herself and doesn’t need the fleeting attention of the flashy spotlight to for validation, she already has it sewn into the fabric of her being…

Marchesa

Marchesa Fall 2016 collection from New York Fashion Week

You can always expect the drama to be turned up at a Marchesa show and this Fall 2016 collection is right on cue. Inspired by the royal gardens at Highgrove House and the work of Edwardian society artist John Singer Sargent, each of these beauties appear to be a garden rose plucked at the height of beauty to be presented with regal pose to the courts. Marchesa has reminded me that we are all queens of our worlds, and though the tulle, feathers and organza is soft, our confidence is strong…

Naeem Khan

Naeem Khan Spring / Summer 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week

Today I head out to cover the last few days of New York Fashion Week which should prove to make some interesting Snapchat { add me! AnnStreetStudio } content. Aside from my usual loves, Marchesa and Ralph Lauren, I’ll be covering Naeem Khan. Images here are from his Spring 2016 show of a collection inspired by Grace Kelly,  Sophia Loren, a trip to Mexico, Frida Kahlo’s style, and the blossoming flowers of the Mediterranean. I think it’s quite clear, when Mr. Khan dreams of a woman, he sees us blooming at our most splendid…

Protagonist

I recently discovered Protagonist though the tightly curated site The Line that always seems to find the coolest yet most understated items in fashion, beauty and home decor. Offline their retail store is done through a living editorial moment by putting the shopping experience inside the dream Soho loft, known as “The Apartment by The Line“. Whenever I pop in I am always inspired either by the chic curation for the woman I dream to be in New York (think minimal, confident, quality) or through discovery of new designers whom all seem to have an affinity toward elevated wardrobe essentials, the kind of pieces you invest in because they will never go out of style.

Protagonist, under the direction of Georgia Lazzaro, formally of Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin Klein, is a delicious study in simplicity and quality. The Line, known mostly for their shirting, has stolen my heart for their black and white basics, especially in the realm of the LBD. I stopped by their NYFW presentation hosted at The Apartment in Soho to see what direction they are going in and how much I need to save to become a Protagonist woman.

Marchesa

Marchesa Spring / Summer 2016 collection at the St. Regis New York for NYFW. It was as if someone opened a gilded bird cage and released a menagerie of exotic creatures loose in the middle of Manhattan watching Marchesa‘s spring summer collection emerge at the glamorous St. Regis New York. The fearless gowns were unapologetic in volume and romance, as if whom ever would wear such pieces of art would have the entire gardens of Versailles to swan around in under the might night sky. From the rainbow ombre tulle to the tiers of feathers, caged corsets to the gilded thread work, this is Marchesa’s imagined enchanted aviary garden set to the chorus of “Addicted to Love” and addicted, I am.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren Fall 2015 collection show at New York Fashion WeekThis might just be the coziest thing I’ve ever seen walk down the runways of New York Fashion Week. Ralph Lauren managed to perfectly balance the modern day woman that wants to look polished but comfortable, classic but current, with a life that is both urban and rural. I loved the creams, tans, chocolates, sage and gold which automatically puts you in the mood for autumn leaves and crackling fires. The first heart-stopping moments for me was a spectacular ivory lace gown with a victorian neck collar that reminded me of this old fashioned romance. Then, in total Americana glamour, he closed the show with the perfect golden goddess gown and I was once again, living in a Ralph Lauren world.

… before the show I went backstage to shoot some of the looks up close and personal which are mixed in below with my favorite runway moments!

Marchesa

Marchesa__02

The Marchesa show is always one of opulent fantasy and this season was no exception. Hosted at the glamorous St. Regis New York, models cascaded down the runway under swaths of sparking chandeliers, mirrored walls and classic molding. Tucked away in this grandeur of an intimate ballroom we floated into designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig’s inspiration of Opium Dreams translated into gowns of billowing smoke, 3-D floral embroideries, fiery explosions of poppy red, a dance of seduction in barely there crystal embroidery and an ocean of waltzing fringe reminiscent of far away parties from jazz era opulence.

Now this is a dream I could dream forever…

10 Fav Looks: Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren's Spring / Summer 2015 collectionRalph Lauren always takes us on a journey, be it the rolling green estate of an English manor, the perfectly fitted and delicately embellished world of Jay Gatsby or lost on the shining streets of Paris at night. This season we find ourselves embarking on the greatest journey of all- Safari. With a slight military embellishment and topped off with colorful crystals that take my mind deep into wilds of India, Ralph Lauren takes on trekking in the chicest way possible. The closing dress to the show gave me goosebumps and a rush of a thousands visions of photographic moments: running through the tall grass on a vast savannah, riding on the back of an elephant enveloped in clouds of red dust or climbing on to a prop plane under a setting sun in the most ‘Out of Africa‘ romantic way possible…

10 Fav Looks: Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta's Spring / Summer 2015 collection

There is no one on earth who makes a woman feel more beautiful than Oscar de la Renta, she said to the world. Sometimes I feel like I get in trouble because all I want is to get caught up and live in the romantic, beautiful world like the one ODLR has built these floral walls around. Every woman looks like a modern day Hepburn gliding down the runway and it’s all I can do to stay focused on taking the picture rather than getting lost in the garden party of dreams. High above Bryant Park to sound of classical music, we were all lovely ladies for Oscar’s moment in time…

10 Fav Looks: Donna Karan

Donna Karan's Spring / Summer 2014 collection

It’s a rare collection where I personally want to wear every single piece, but then there is Donna Karan‘s spring/summer 2015 show. I’m 100% into everything, and I’m not alone in this sentiment – style.com called it “vibrant, uncomplicated, desirable“. There’s the perfect way the sleeves were rolled on her popped collar tops that made me feel like we were getting ready to dance the salsa all night long…even the patterns (something I typically stray away from) were turned into chic, wearable art by Donna.

So the love affair continues with the Queen of New York…

5 Fav Looks: Jenny Packham

Jenny Packham's Spring / Summer 2015 collection

Jenny Packham‘s collection this season was inspired by the most famous woman in the world. While waiting for the show to start I read an open letter Packham wrote to Marilyn Monroe on the depth of research and inspiration she based these designs on. I found it quite beautiful and thought I’d share so you can hear the designers thoughts directly on this collection that makes me so glad to be a woman:

Dear Marilyn,

I’ve read the book and listened to the recordings, visted your bungalow at the Beverly Hills and sat in your chair at the Max Factor building where you became a blonde, all the while challenging why you are still so relevant in this brace new world. I’ve held your ‘some like it hot’ LBD, looked inside your corsets and collected your images. I’ve tried to decipher whether your attraction is familiarity or something else.

A self-made woman and a brilliant actress who sewed buttons into her bra and affcted a walk and a giggle, enough to make armies of men fall at her feet. You were media savvy, a photographic phenomenon and the first woman to have her own production company. However, for me it’s that smile that makes you ever relevant and time enduring.

As a muse you’ve been inspiring: your style is definitive and your images have, with their technicolor intensity, created this season’s colour palette.

At first I was nervous, I tried to be clever with the way you influenced me but you handed me inspiration on a plate and I decided just to eat it up!

Thanks Marilyn.

5 Fav Looks: Tadashi Shoji

Tadashi Shoji Spring / Summer 2015 collection

Fashion has a way of being transportive. Sunday we were on an adventurous trek around the globe with Jill Stuart, earlier today Prabal took us to Nepal, and now, Tadashi Shoji has us lost in the romance of Venice. Traveling is so important to open our minds and hearts. I know for me, traveling has changed my life and way of thinking. It’s no wonder so many designers take inspiration from places beyond our own everyday boundaries and then reinterpret these sights, smells, colors, experiences and emotions in their work so that we may all experience it with them. So here we are, sitting on the Grand Canal in Venice with Mr. Shoji, watching the magnificent Ca’ d’Oro reflecting off the water like the brush stokes of a Monet…

5 Fav Looks: Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung's Spring / Summer 2014 collection

I always love Prabal Gurung’s showmanship. There is a beauty beyond the clothing, a psychology to his army of women marching toward the light. His spring collection continues into those depths through layers and folds, textures and patterns that lead your eye endlessly in a dance inspired by the natural beauty of the Nepalese sky and spirituality of the Himalayas. Through his designs may at first glance look very feminine with the flick of ostrich feathers or sweep of chiffon, at closer examination there is a strength to the Gurung girl, seen through her razor backs, belting details or harness like bodices.  According to Prabal, this is how he plays on the juxtaposition of traditional Nepalese dressing from childhood memories and androgynous American sportswear that lives outside his New York City studio walls today.
