Men in This Town

MenInThisTown

I met Giuseppe Santamaria, a men’s street style photographer, back in 2011 covering NYFW together. Since I’ve watched Giuseppe’s career and photography really grow into something very special in the men’s style realm. So special, in fact, that a book of his photographs was published this September called “Men in This Town“.  Giuseppe’s approach to photography, men’s fashion, and street style is quite romantic and not at all trendy or concerned with the “who’s who”. He really shoots from his heart. We sat down at our studio last week to catch up and ask him all about his first book~

How did Men in this Town begin?

It started with a tweet. I had photographed my friend’s cookbook cover, and then I started following his publisher on Twitter. One day he said, “Done for 2013 books. Onto next year. Any ideas?” I jokingly tweeted back, “How about a Men in This Town book?” And a year later, it came out.

When did you first start photographing?

By trade I’m a graphic designer. I’ve been working with photos and amazing photographers my entire career. That’s where my eye was trained – not conventionally at all.

How did you learn photography?

Vogue India

One of the greatest things about being a photographer in NYC is working with some of the world’s best high profile companies…which naturally attract the best employees. We have had a long, beautiful, sparkling relationship with Chopard this year where I met Prerna Balani, the Senior Public Relations Manager.

How do you describe Prerna? Well, she’s always in a heel, she always keeps it classic, loving black, white, and navy, and she wore THESE amazing earrings I couldn’t take my eyes off of to the Oscar party. She is one of the most beautiful and intelligent women I know and our friendship pops up in places like LACannes, and on this day – New York’s Meat Packing district.

I have always said, I am more comfortable in a room full of kings than being king of the room. When I work with amazing companies like Chopard they put you in a room full of those people, with Prerna being the social commander of them all. It’s no wonder VOGUE India just labeled her one of the most stylish women in the world.

Congratulations my friend, what a gift to photograph you for the world to see –

Prerna wears Ray-Ban sunnies, Chanel bag, Nicholas suit, Zara Shoes (similar), Helmut Lang Leather jacket (similar), with Hermes and Chopard stacked rings.

Above cover image, these are a few of my favorite things: Apothecary Matchstick Bottle (found here originally), handmade pottery vase I have dubbed my Van Gogh vase from HERE, Himalayan Salt Candle holder we bought from a flea market on the UWS and glows so beautifully, Moroccan Oil candle which reminds me of my time HERE, Woven glass square bowl, Catch all three stripes porcelain bowl– a housewarming gift from these two, my men’s Giorgio Armani glasses because they remind me of him….

NYC Street Style

This past October we created a fall fantasy with the heritage and nostalgia of Etienne Aigner within the walls of Ann Street Studio. In contrast, I wanted to show the leather goods in the daily lives of real New York women: on the go yet always fashionable.
