Ari Dein

AriDein_01 Recently I’ve been really getting into lingerie: not crazy garter corset items, but wearable everyday pieces that feel and look amazing. I start with sets for the daytime and end with beautiful slips at night. When I stopped by the CFDA’s Incubator space to interview the designers behind Timo Weiland this past NYFW, I ran into Arielle Shapiro – the New York-born, former ballerina designer behind the line Ari Dein. It was like instant love. Her pieces are made to be wearable, flattering and feminine. It’s no wonder brands like Carolina Herrera have brought her on to design capsule collections for them. I was so thrilled when she made her fall line available for me to photograph exclusively at the studio and sat her down to get the story on how she went from working for other designers to starting her own line of lingerie….

What do you think it is about lingerie that inspires confidence in women?

I think, to me, fashion creates clothing that allows women to change their entire sensibility about themselves. You put on a dress and you’ve become something, a certain style or character.

Lingerie helps you accept and embrace who you are because it’s something that only you know about. And because the fit is so crucial, the size becomes about loving your body. No one ever says, “Oh, I wish I had this size band…” It’s the Holy Grail when you find something that fits, and the fit changes how you feel about yourself.

I think there’s something modest about lingerie, actually. It’s a private thing, something only you know about…but then if someone else is going to see it, you’re prepared and they’re lucky.

Exotic Flower

Shot on medium format color film at Ann Street Studio September 2013

Only a few weeks ago, we were preparing for our epic #onlyinsouthamerica trip (which we are in the middle of right now!), while at the same time, Kelly was readying herself for her incredible adventure through Asia. We were getting so excited about all the things we would see for the first time: new types of vegetation, wondrous natural colors to feast our eyes upon, and new beauty routines from women who walk in different parts of the world, all awaiting our discovery in the coming weeks.

To celebrate and channel our excitement, we collaborated with our friend Bess (remember this romantic shoot?) who always comes over to the studio with the most amazing and exotic flowers you have ever seen. Together, we started our adventure at home in the studio with a color explosion of natural wonders…

Classic Beauty

We’ve been hearing for a while that orange is the new black, but this season’s fashion week absolutely proved it. Bright orange lips and nails were all over the runway, showing us that it’s time to break this color out!

Backstage at the DKNY show, it was all about the lip. Created using a mixture of Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in #880 Electric Orange and #890 Neon Red, it was vivid and eye-catching without being overwhelming. Lead makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury explained that applying the lipstick directly from the tube and then softening the edges with a finger helps take down the intensity.

To allow the lips to keep the spotlight, Tilbury kept the skin looking fresh and dewy with Dream Lumi Concealer and FIT me! Pressed Powder. The light touch of blush was, literally, a touch – Tilbury added Dream Bouncy Blush in Hot Tamale with her fingertips.

Safari Beauty

The story behind Donna Karan’s show was that of an urban traveller…a woman who jetsets around the world, taking in its various beauties.

So what is the beauty routine of a woman intent on adventure?

“Think a chic glamorous hippie in the desert,” said lead makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. The vibe was a sensual, earthy seventies. Tilbury was armed with a full spread of MAC’s cream eyeshadow to create a warmed-up, weather-beaten look with brown tones and bronzer. “This is make-up that looks good on everyone – it’s what every woman wants,” Charlotte explained. We quite agree.

“We contoured the eyes with cream eye colours in earth tones, sculpted cheeks with lashings of bronzer, and applied lip-plumping, tan-enhancing beigey-pink gloss. The foundation is glowy, too; there’s nothing matte about this look.”
