Cashmere Aura

donna_karan_cashmere_aura_001

I spent this past week in Paris. Paris is different in the fall than New York. She turns a beautiful tone of grey, softness in the sky, everything becomes sort of fuzzy. It was cold for the first time this autumn and I found myself wanting to be wrapped in cashmere and bathed in that perfect Parisian light that angles through the windows glowing off the surfaces of skin and disappearing into folds of fabric. Matching my current mood and experience completely was Donna Karan’s Cashmere Aura perfume. I have been a fan and a client as one of her photographers, for many years. Donna Karan represents the kind of woman I strive to be. Independent, confident, successful, world traveled, strong, elegant and most of all… a New Yorker.

But here I am in Paris, exploring the light and exploring new sides of my creativity, taking the time to really feel confident about who I became in New York, what all the hard work was for, and where I want it apply it in my work moving forward. I’ve been making notes about attributes about myself that I can now come to say define me. One of those is my love for scents. I am always perfumed. It’s a daily ritual for me. My hair is scented, my sheets are scented, my baths are scented, my candles are scented, whatever it is about my senses that loves the taste of good food and a beautiful painting also loves a beautiful scent.

I change my perfumes based on the weather. I change my perfume based on my mood. I apply the scents to my neck, behind my ears, on my chest, behind my knees, on the inside of my ankles and always before bed and most certainly on my way out the door. In all the apartment buildings I’ve lived in New York, I’ve always had neighbors comment to me how they loved the way I smelled and always knew when I had passed through the halls that day. That aura that we leave behind, that delicate piece of our existence.

This is a new fragrance in my collection sent to me by Donna Karan. In its luminous rose gold bottle, this mini art sculpture is inspired by the work of Donna Karan’s late husband which is something I’ve always found so touching about her perfumes. The notes are a bright and sparkling balance of modern florals with cashmeran, coumarin, vanilla, sandalwood accord, cassie absolute, ylang ylang, orris accord, sparkling aldehydes, Italian bergamot, and orange oil. A perfect projection for essence of a woman, confidently feminine, and her aura into the world.

My days in Paris were marked in my memories by this scent… and I hope a little piece of my aura was left behind. Below are images captured from moments of my life where I found the intimacy of perfume, skin, light, and life beautifully enraptured in creating the scent of a woman.

Meet Jasmine Poulton

JasminePoulton__02Yesterday we played out one of my personal fantasies of glamour and fashion high atop the city skyline in a Mandarin Oriental suite with our British Wilhelmina model Jasmine Poulton. We were talking about dreams, the way so  many come to New York to find them or fulfill them. I asked Jasmine about her own life, what brought her to our city, a place where it seems everyone is from somewhere, and how she ended up on this beautiful fall day in front of my lens…

JasminePoulton__03

New York is a city of dreams…my New York dream is….

Leaving every other weekend.

When I model I….

 Act.

The reason I moved to New York is…

To be free.

I am most inspired by…

Nature, music, love, a mind’s endless ideas.

Fashion is…

More than what’s current.

Women are…

One of nature’s greatest beauties & powers.

Mandarin Oriental Dreams

Mandarin_Oriental_02 (1)

High atop Manhattan’s skyline, overlooking Central Park and the Hudson River sits the proud Mandarin Oriental, glittering in the golden setting sun of an early autumn day. I love New York this time of year, I love the fantasy of glamour, a world where fashion, culture, business and design all collide into spectacular moments. When I was young and I dreamed of New York it was always like this – overlooking that powerful skyline that still mesmerizes me, in diamonds and designer gowns. Here, model and artist Jasmine Poulton brings my dreams to life in the Mandarin Oriental’s Oriental Suite in Donna Karan‘s very special 30th anniversary fall 2014 collection (remember when I took you backstage) and Chopard diamonds from the high jewelry collection

10 Fav Looks: Donna Karan

Donna Karan's Spring / Summer 2014 collection

It’s a rare collection where I personally want to wear every single piece, but then there is Donna Karan‘s spring/summer 2015 show. I’m 100% into everything, and I’m not alone in this sentiment – style.com called it “vibrant, uncomplicated, desirable“. There’s the perfect way the sleeves were rolled on her popped collar tops that made me feel like we were getting ready to dance the salsa all night long…even the patterns (something I typically stray away from) were turned into chic, wearable art by Donna.

So the love affair continues with the Queen of New York…

Donna Karan in 15 Seconds

Featured Video Play Icon

To celebrate Donna Karan’s 30th anniversary show the fashion community traveled to one of the oldest parts of Manhattan, to a financial district building now unused, layered in history, but primed for reinvention as Manhattan itself does on a constant, noisy basis. A footnote of that building’s history unfolded with a runway show by one of the city’s most iconic designers in a collection of aggresive reds and blacks, paired with a soundtrack that intensified the visuals. This is Donna Karan F/W 2014, shot last February at New York Fashion Week.

New York, New York…

~From the New York Fashion Week Archive~

The city pulsed in every beat at the 30th anniversary Donna Karan show. And why shouldn’t it? New York City has always been the heart of Donna Karan’s work, and this season it serves as the main inspiration. Set in a building along the New York Stock Exchange, the city’s ceaseless motion, glistening lights, and sleek skyline were all captured in the simply luxurious pieces that came down the runway.

These pieces only further served what we all already know – that Donna Karan may be inspired by the city, but she designs for the women in it. “Thirty years later, I see style as an evolution, a unique reflection of who you are, where you’ve been and where you are going,” she said.

In New York City or out of it, we’ll be going with you, Donna…congratulations on 30 wonderful years…

Donna Karan Resort

DonnaKaran_02

Winter in New York can be brutal, which is why I have been especially enjoying the resort temperatures of L.A. and Brazil where our recent work has taken us. Last year I had the wonderful job of shooting Ava Smith for Donna Karan’s Resort 2014 mailer without knowing how significant this time of year would be. As you know, I have a very deep photographic relationship with Donna Karan and this week, as New York Fashion Week begins again with designers showing their Fall / Winter 2014 collections, I will be in house with them trying to capture the intimate moments that I associate so very well with the Donna Karan women I aspire to be…

Every piece tells a textured story

The story is of an urban traveler…a woman trekking across the world, finding beauty everywhere she goes: in the swirling dust of the Australian Outback, the golden plains of Africa at sunrise, the red clays of the American Southwest. The journey has a palette of dusty reds, browns, and golds wrapped in the open expanse of blue summer skies.

The result of this voyage is a collection that is perfect for summer…

The pieces are earthy and sensual, draped for real women’s bodies to highlight our beautiful femininity, regardless of size or shape. What I loved most is how realistic and supremely wearable they were without losing any sense of style or artistry. This season was full of artisanal beauty, with hand-blocked prints and hand-beaded embroideries, which only added to the grounded sophistication.

This season our New York woman goes back to the earth with Donna Karan

Donna Karan knows women. She knows how they sashay across streets, she knows how they command a corporate desk, she knows how they go out on the town. Donna Karan designs for all of the facets of a woman’s life, and nowhere was it more clear than in her most recent collection, “The L Word”.

Using several “L” words as inspiration – long, lean, languid, luxurious, light, limitless – Karan created a collection that captured the dualities of a modern woman. The pieces were an elegant mix of urban and calm, fitted and draped,  neutral and bright, allowing the woman who wears them to simply be, whenever and wherever she may find herself…now that is something this New Yorker can relate to.

You can only be who you are…

I am a New York woman, embracing the world. Designing clothes that move day to night, Monday to Sunday in any city, every culture.

My husband Stephan – his art and soul – is a part of me, inspiring and guiding me to sculpt the body with expression.

This collection is the evolution of seven easy pieces, a system where the body and spirit communicate the sensuality and power of being a woman, with multiple passions, constantly on the go.

As one half of a creative couple, I know how much you can be influenced by your partner.

Donna Karan‘s newest collection was displayed alongside sculptures made by her late husband, Stephan Weiss. Visually, it was easy to make connections between the two as they shared a toned-down palette of blacks, browns, grays, and whites, as well as a love of fluid, feminine curves.

It’s beautiful to see how fashion can be affected and influenced by art, and how Donna is still influenced by the love she had for Stephan.
